The SAT Writing Section (Essay): Here's What You Need to Know.
On the new SAT, there is a whole-test score, and a number of different kinds of individual scores that assess your abilities by both section and question types that appear across multiple sections. The new scoring system is a bit complex, so we’ve made an article to break it all down for you.
The essay is (technically) optional on the ACT, but it’s mandatory on the SAT, so that makes a pretty distinct difference in scoring. Your standard ACT score includes only your performance on the English section (that’s the grammar and writing multiple choice), keeping the essay separate, but if you want to calculate SAT scores, you have to factor the essay score into your overall writing.
I got a 1520 on the new SAT (760 verbal, 760 math) but a 7, 6, 6 on the essay portion. I saw percentiles for the scores but couldn't find any for the essay portion of the test. What is a good SAT essay score (and if possible, what are the statistics on the distribution of essay scores on the New SAT)? Thanks!
You’re in luck: the change will not affect you. Because you’ll take the new SAT, you should prepare for the 2016 PSAT (which will be in the new format) and plan to take the SAT during your junior year. By that point, the dust will have settled and the “new” SAT won’t be new anymore, so you won’t have to worry about flux and change.

The Old SAT vs. the New SAT In the last sixty-three years, the SAT has only undergone one major change, which occurred in 2005 when the test added a grammar- and essay-based Writing score. But the College Board will be stirring things up once again, this time only eleven years later, when it debuts the redesigned SAT in March of 2016.
As per new guidelines, SAT will be now scored out of 1600 with only 2 sections. It will include: Math; Evidence-based Reading and Writing. The aggregate score of each section will be in the range of 200 to 800 resulting into a composite of 400 to 1600.
