The Green Belt Movement is an environmental organization whose aim is to make the planet green again through fighting deforestation and preventing soil erosion. It engages the community, especially women, in its process and, in return, compensates participants with a small monetary payment. It has now become an international platform for women’s empowerment through the conservation of.
The Green Belt Movement was what started the tree planting idea. It was a way for women who id not have much power to raise their voices and be heard. They would plant trees where the government did not want them to plant trees, which would make the government pay attention to them.
The essay prize competition is named in honor of Wangari Maathai ( b.1940-d. 2011), the Kenyan scholar and activist who, in 2004, became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace prize. Wangari Maathai was Kenyan environmentalist who began a movement to reforest her country by paying poor women a few shillings to plant trees.
